Bridgewater State University’s Family Performing Arts Center seeks actors for its summer production of Shrek, directed by Colleen Rua, music direction by Eli Bigelow and choreography by Dori Bryan. Auditions will be held on April 1, 2 and 3. First rehearsal is May 15 and performances are July 14, 15, 16 and 21, 22, 23. FPAC’S inaugural production of Seussical (January 2016) was nominated for a Broadwayworld.com regional award. Most recently, FPAC presented Mary Poppins to packed houses, cementing its place as a destination for family entertainment.

Character Descriptions

SHREK: A green, grumpy and gross, but not unlikable, ogre who lives alone in a swamp; Strong, rich tone quality tenor/baritone with legit G4.
FIONA: Princess Fiona is the princess of “Far Far Away”, who turns into an ogre every night when the sun sets. Not your “traditional” princess. Bright, warm soprano who can belt. Tap experience a plus.
DONKEY: Shrek’s talkative, sometimes annoying but good-hearted best friend, who sticks by Shrek’s side after Shrek saves him. Strong tenor voice with soulful style.
LORD FARQUAAD: A comically short, ruthless ruler of the huge castle of Duloc. 1st tenor with bright tone quality. Must be capable of dance movement on knees.
GINGY: Short, talking Gingerbread man, who is friend of Shrek; Male/Female, Supporting role, sop, mezzo, alto, tenor, treble, boy soprano
DRAGON: Female, Supporting role; Alto, Mezzo-Belter with gospel sound a la Aretha Franklin.
PAPA OGRE: Male, featured role; tenor/baritone
MAMA OGRE: Female; featured role; alto
KING HAROLD: Male, featured role; baritone
LITTLE OGRE: Male, featured role; alto/tenor
PINOCHIO: Male/Female featured role; soprano, mezzo, alto, tenor, treble, boy soprano
3 LITTLE PIGS: Male, supporting roles; baritone
QUEEN LILLIAN: Female, featured role; soprano, mezzo, alto
YOUNG FIONA: Female, featured role; soprano
TEEN FIONA: Female, featured role; soprano
CAPTAIN OF THE GUARD: Male, featured role; baritone, bass
DRAGON KNIGHTS: Male, featured roles; tenor, baritone
ENSEMBLE CHARACTERS: Male/female – Little Shrek, Angry Mob, Happy People, Young Shrek, Three Blind Mice, Bishop, Rat dancers and Pied Piper, Duloc Citizens/Dancers; ALL strong singers with some featured solo/duet moments. Tap experience is preferable for Pied Piper and required for Rat dancers.
FAIRYTALE CREATURES: Male/Female – Big Bad Wolf, White Rabbit, Fairy Godmother, Peter Pan, Wicked Witch, Sugar Plum Fairy, Ugly Duckling, Three Bears, Mad Hatter, Humpty Dumpty, Elf, Dwarves, etc. ALL strong singers with some featured solo/duet moments. Must move well.
